Tl’azt’en Nation is made into 3 reserves. There are Tache, Binche, Dzitl’ainli and there is another called K’uzche but nobody stays there all year round it’s like a camping ground. They are located in different areas of our territory. We have a Band Office and each department has its own building, there is the Health Center, Public Works, Education, Treaty, Fisheries and an Elders Center. There is an Elementary School that we have and we have our own people managing it. There also is a Day Care for ages 0-3, it’s called “Sum Yaz” (in our own language that means “little stars”), and a Head Start for ages 3-6 that is to teach our kids our own culture and get a head start before they head on to kindergarten. They teach them to hunt, fish, pick berries, tell stories, legends and language. We are trying to get everybody back into our language and culture before we lose it all. Our people still live off the land; we still hunt for moose, deer, bear, caribou, mountain goats, and small fur bearing animals. We set nets for salmon, white fish, trout, kokanee, spring salmon, and lingcod. We still go to our camp grounds in the summer time and gather food for our winter storage. Each family has its own camp ground and it’s all in the area of Tl’azt’en’s territory. |
