Moise Morice Johnnie

Moise Morice Johnnie was born on May 10, 1911 in village of Tache. He was a council member for many years with the former Stuart-Trembleur Band. At that time he envisioned a united community. He saw a need to save our traditional territories from clear-cutting and other destructive activities.

Moise knew how to read and translate the Dene syllabary. He was one of a handful of elders who knew how to read and translate the writing system. Before his death on December 26, 1996, he translated Father Morice’s Syllabic Newspaper For the Carrier Indians of British Columbia, The Paper That Relates, William R. O’Hara, 1992.
